What is Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing?

The Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Inc., (PHWFF) mission is to “Assist in the physical and emotional rehabilitation of disabled military service personnel and veterans through fly fishing and fly tying education and outings”.  The PHWFF program in Denver includes fly rods building, seasonal advanced fly tying classes and mentoring a veterans fly fishing club enabling veterans a means to continue their fly fishing experiences.

Veterans referred to PHWFF from metro-Denver Veterans Administration facilities are aged from 20s to +80 years. These men and women have served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam and the current Middle East conflicts. Founded in 2005, PHWFF has 119 programs in 41 states, including four programs in Colorado, with more in the plan.

How are these rehabilitation activities managed?

PHWFF is a volunteer-run organization. The Denver program has approximately 50 active men and women volunteers donating over 2,000 hours of volunteer time per year supporting our population of almost 80 veterans. The program is designated by the IRS as a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization.

How does PHWFF obtain annual funding?

PHWFF relies on the generosity of both private and corporate donors, and fly fishing-related businesses. PHWFF receives no government funding. Volunteers receive no monetary compensation.

How are funds used for PHWFF participants?

Equipment and supplies not donated are purchased. Donor funds are used to buy fly fishing equipment, fly tying and rod building materials, gasoline for vehicles used during outings, lunches during outings, lodging for overnight trips, tips for guide services, and other materials and services that are part of the fly fishing experience. PHWFF volunteers accompany the military personnel and veterans on fishing outings. These volunteers typically pay their own expenses.
